When it comes to dressing your tables, "close enough" isn't an option. You want clean lines, a sharp drop, and a look that feels completely intentional.

Round Tables
Achieving a clean, tailored look with round tables requires a bit of planning. To find the perfect tablecloth size, you must always account for the surface diameter of the table top plus the necessary fabric drape on both sides.
Depending on the formality and style of your event, you will typically choose between two main drape styles:
To the Floor: A standard event table stands 30 inches tall. If you want the fabric to skim the ground for a seamless, classic look, your desired drop is 30 inches.
Halfway Down: For a more casual setting, or if you plan to use a decorative table base that you want partially visible, a mid-way drop of 15 inches is ideal.
The Formula: Table Diameter + (Desired Drop x 2) = Your Linen Size
Example: You have a standard 60-inch round table and you want it to hit the floor (30-inch drop).
60" table + (30" drop x 2) = 120" Round Tablecloth
Rectangular Tables
Dressing rectangular and square tables follows the exact same logical principle as round tables. The key distinction here is that you must calculate the measurements for both the length and the width independently, ensuring the fabric drops evenly across all four edges of the table.
Just like with round setups, you will need to double your desired drop for both axes to account for the fabric cascading down opposite sides.
The Formula:
Table Length + (Desired Drop x 2) = Linen Length
Table Width + (Desired Drop x 2) = Linen Width
Example: Imagine you are dressing a standard 6-foot folding banquet table, which typically measures 72 inches long by 30 inches wide. To give it a polished, professional look that touches the floor, you will use a standard 30-inch drop.
For the Length: Add a 60-inch total drop to the table's length (72” + 60” = 132”).
For the Width: Add the same 60-inch total drop to the table's width (30” + 60” = 90“).
Your Target Size: 90" x 132" Rectangular Tablecloth
Cocktail & Café Tables
Standard cocktail tables are taller, usually standing at 42 inches. You have two main ways to style these:
The Classic Drape: Use a standard round tablecloth and calculate using a 42-inch drop.
Formula: Table Diameter + 84" = Your Linen Size.
The Clean & Tight Look: Skip the loose fabric entirely and use Fitted Spandex Tablecloths. They hook directly into the table legs (perfect for X-style or 4-legged bases) so they won't blow away or lose their sleek shape.
Overlays & Sashes
Elevating the Layout with Overlays
Want to break up the visual monotony of standard floor-length linens? Throwing a square overlay on a round or rectangular table is one of the easiest ways to inject texture, contrast, or a pop of color into your event design. To ensure a cohesive look, you just need to calculate the depth of the fabric's drape, which is commonly referred to as the "drop," so it hits exactly where you want it.
The Formula: (Overlay Length - Table Length or Diameter) ÷ 2 = Overlay Drop
Example: If you drape an 80-inch square overlay over a standard 60-inch round table, you subtract the table size from the linen size (80” - 60” = 20”) and divide that number in half. The result is a clean, perfectly symmetrical 10-inch point drop cascading down the sides of the table.
Cinching the Look with Sashes
For high-top cocktail tables, a tablecloth alone can sometimes look a bit loose or wind-blown, especially at outdoor venues. Tying a coordinated fabric sash around the table's "waist" or stem instantly refines the silhouette, creating an elegant hourglass shape.
